Loykrathong is celebrated throughout Thailand, but in Chiang Mai, home of Lanna culture, people also celebrate Yee Peng by releasing lanterns, or Khomloy, into the sky. Yee Peng in Chiang Mai is an unforgettable sight and the best way to enjoy this cultural event is to attend a mass lantern release.
About Yeepeng Festival
According to the lunar calendar, the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 12th lunar month is celebrated annually. For the Lanna people, it signifies the full moon day of the second lunar month and is known as the Yi Peng tradition or the festival of releasing lanterns into heaven. Additionally, it is part of the Loy Krathong Festival celebrated by the Thai people nationwide.
The Lanna people inhabit the upper northern region of Thailand and observe the Yi Peng tradition, a significant Buddhist practice believed to be a grand and essential affair. This tradition is rooted in the belief held by Buddhists that all rivers in the world eventually flow into the Tavatimsa heaven, the site of the Chulamanee Chedi containing the hair relics of the current Buddha. Considering Thailand’s historical agricultural society, this practice is recognized as a form of worship dedicated to Mae Kongkha, the water goddess credited with providing water throughout the year.

Sky Lanterns
The Sky Lanterns or Khomloy is the signature of the Yipeng Festival commonly believed to carry away bad lucks. It is also a means to pay respect to the ancestors who rest in heaven.
Loy Krathong
The Local believe floating Krathong is to show gratefulness to the Goddess of Water. There is also a romantic saying that if a couple’s Krathongs floats side by side, it symbolize forever love.
Phang Pratheep
On the night of Loi Krathong, Chiang Mai people decorate small clay pots called Phang Pratheep with thousands of candles, which Lanna people believe bring wisdom and light to life.
